Labor blue is democracy in action: Slipper

Parliamentary Speaker Peter Slipper says the Labor leadership contest is an example of “democracy in action”.

Mr Slipper has posted a YouTube video commenting on the duel between Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd, which will come to a vote of the Labor caucus on Monday.

Mr Slipper, who as Speaker has a duty to remain independent of party politics, said people had been asking him about the process.

“While it would be entirely inappropriate for me as the independent speaker of the House of Representatives to speculate on an outcome, what we are seeing is an exercise of democracy in action,” he says.

He says Australia is a young country but an old democracy, reminding voters that the governing party needs the support of a majority of lower house members.

The Gillard minority government relies on the support of the Greens and independents.

“We are all proud to be Australian and the process that is under way at the moment is educational for all of us,” Mr Slipper said.
