Labor declares victory in Melbourne

Victorian Labor is claiming victory over the Greens in a tightly-contested fight for the state seat of Melbourne.

Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews and Melbourne candidate Jennifer Kanis made the declaration on Sunday morning, as counting put Labor in front by 754 votes.

“Labor believes we have won the Melbourne by-election,” Mr Andrews told reporters.

“We’re very proud of the result, we’re very proud to have run a very strong local campaign.”

Ms Kanis narrowly edged out Greens candidate Cathy Oke, winning 51.38 per cent of the two-party preferred vote to the Greens’ 48.62 per cent.

With 66 per cent of the vote counted, the result is a symbolic win for Labor, which has held the seat for more than a century.

The ALP suffered a swing of almost five per cent to the Greens, while the party’s primary vote dipped by about two percentage points to 33 per cent.

“We always said this would be a tough fight and … the primary vote that we’ve been able to achieve is significantly higher than many thought it would actually be,” Mr Andrews said.

“We’re very proud to have been able to win the trust of Melbourne voters. We’ve got a long road ahead of us and I take nothing for granted.”

Mr Andrews said the government’s $300 million TAFE cuts played a role in the by-election outcome and the coalition, which did not run a candidate, would be plagued by the decision for years to come.

He said Labor’s campaign had exposed as “a fraud” the Greens’ central premise that they could deliver anything for anyone.

“The fact is this, they simply can’t. (They are) one voice in the grandstand saying all the right things to everybody without ever an opportunity to form a majority and deliver for those same people – that (rhetoric) achieves nothing.”

Ms Kanis shrugged off questions about Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s absence during the campaign.

“No one’s really talking to me about federal issues at all,” she said.
