Labor to blame for low CSG support: Newman

Queensland is divided on coal seam gas mining because of the government’s handling of the industry, Liberal National Party (LNP) leader Campbell Newman claims.

A Newspoll published in The Australian newspaper on Monday showed only 33 per cent of Queenslanders were in favour of coal seam gas.

Mr Newman takes a different message from the poll.

“A third were against it, a third were in support of it and a third were undecided,” he told reporters in Brisbane on Monday.

“Clearly that’s not good enough and it reflects that Labor have created a mess.”

Mr Newman says the LNP has a policy to provide equity and transparency to mining companies and farmers.

“It will be about tightening environmental standards, particularly about protecting precious underground water,” he said.

Premier Anna Bligh says CSG has been used in Queensland for 20 years, but she understands Queenslanders have questions about the industry as it booms.

“Our task is to make it safe and to make it work for Queenslanders and that’s what it will do,” she said.

The Queensland Greens say the poll shows opposition to CSG crosses party lines.

Australian Greens Senator Larissa Waters says her party is the only one taking the issue seriously.

“If Queenslanders want state-level action on coal seam gas, they need to vote for a Queensland Green to be their voice in state parliament,” she said.
