Labor will regain power in Qld: Palaszczuk

Labor will regain power in Queensland, the state opposition leader has assured the party faithful.

Annastacia Palaszczuk has used a Labour Day dinner in Brisbane to rally the troops and announce plans for a policy think tank to help rebuild the embattled party.

She said Queensland Labor was down but not out after the election landslide by the Liberal National Party (LNP) on March 24.

“We must set our sights on regaining government in this state,” Ms Palaszczuk said on Friday night.

“And I say to you all tonight: we will regain government in Queensland.”

Ms Palaszczuk used the forum to announce a new not-for-profit organisation to debate and discuss new policies.

Funded largely by the ALP and the Queensland Council of Unions, it would be called the T.J. Ryan Foundation after the former state Labor premier.

It would help develop policies that reflect the party’s basic values and encourage debate through public forums, round tables, guest speakers and research projects, Ms Palaszczuk said.

“We will need extra support as we begin redrafting our policies and look for new and bright policy ideas,” she said.

The opposition leader criticised Premier Campbell Newman for flagging public service job cuts and dumping the Premier’s Literary Awards.

She also attacked the criticism of the “Labor brand” by pundits, calling the term marketing jargon that suggested a clinical approach to politics.

“The Labor Party to me has never been just a `brand’ to be marketed. It has always been much more than that,” she said.
