Lady Gaga’s diet tweet sparks controversy among fans, media

As pop star Lady Gaga gears up for her Born This Way Ball, kicking off April 27, the singer is apparently following a strict diet of five small meals a day and hitting the gym hard.

A controversy was sparked last week when the 26-year-old took to Twitter writing “Just killed back to back spin classes. Eating a salad dreaming of a cheeseburger #PopSingersDontEat #IwasBornThisWay.”

Following her tweet, some of her 23 million fans fired back, with one writing, “I was on the verge of becoming bulimic and now I just might because of YOU. #PopSingersDontEat.”

Media reports also claim that Lady Gaga, an icon of self-acceptance and pride in the gay and lesbian communities, is also being dubbed “hypocritical” and “disingenuous” by some experts, who say she is potentially promoting risky dieting behaviors to her legions of fans.

Lady Gaga so far hasn’t addressed the backlash from her tweet.

Still, the five meals a day diet is an improvement from her rumored baby food diet, where she reportedly ate 14 jars of baby food a day in order to achieve reed-thinness for her music videos. She is currently following a diet plan dubbed 5 Factor Diet, developed by her trainer and nutrition guru Harley Pasternak. The plan involves eating five small healthy meals a day — lean protein, low-glycemic carbs, healthy fats, fiber, and a sugar-free beverage — plus a free day to eat whatever she craves. According to FitSugar, Gaga’s munching favorites include grain chips, tofu, turkey slices, hummus, and coconut water.

According to FitSugar, she also works out five times a week for at least 25 minutes each day (however back-to-back spin classes would likely run at around two hours). To achieve her washboard abs, she is devoted to crunches, starting with basic crunches, modified reverse crunches, and double crunches. The pop star is also a veteran yogini; she reportedly visits Bikram and hot yoga studios while on tour, and has worked for years with New York-based teacher Tricia Donegan.
