Liberal senator challenged to a blue

A Labor senator has thrown down the gauntlet to his opposition counterparts, challenging them to take a parliamentary spar on trucking wages outside the chamber.

Truckie turned pollie, Glenn Sterle, called on Liberal frontbencher Eric Abetz to “bring it on” during a fiery exchange in the Senate on Tuesday night.

“Unlike senator Abetz I know what I’m talking about,” the West Australian senator told parliament, noting his long career in the trucking industry.

“Take it outside. I will blue you, I will debate you.

“Come on out mate, you pick the stakes, you pick the trucking yards.”

He extended the invitation across the chamber to Liberal Senator Sean Edwards.

“I’ll sort this out later with Senator Edwards,” he promised.

The call came during debate on legislation to establish a road safety remuneration tribunal to set minimum pay rates and conditions for truck drivers from July.

Opposition industrial relations spokesman Eric Abetz had dismissed Labor’s claims that linked remuneration with road safety.

It was a “myth and cynical” to link road safety to the bill, he told parliament.

“Somehow miraculously, if we are to pass this legislation, we would get rid of very unfortunate and very regrettable fatalities,” he said.

Nationals senator John Williams, another former truckie, also joined in on the debate.

“If you want to get into a blue I can bring on a blue,” he said.

The Road Safety Remuneration Bills later passed the Senate, the passage of which Transport Minister Anthony Albanese described as “historic”.

The link between exploitation and safety for drivers had been well established, he said in a statement, noting that 250 people die in trucking fatalities each year.

“Truck drivers should not have to speed, overload their trucks or drive excessive hours just to make a decent living,” he said.
