Long may the Queen’s holiday reign

MONARCHISTS have accused Labor senator Matt Thistlethwaite of ignoring the will of the Australian people by pushing to scrap the Queen’s Birthday holiday.

Getting rid of the June long-weekend break would be a symbolic first step towards restarting the move towards a republic, Senator Thistlethwaite said yesterday.

”While it was once a quaint notion to celebrate the birth of the monarch, to modern-day Australians it has no significance and is completely outdated,” he told a Young Labor conference in Sydney.

”This celebration is not even held on the actual Queen’s birthday and I think you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who knows on what day the Queen’s birthday actually falls.”

The former general secretary of the NSW Labor Party wants the Queen’s Birthday holiday replaced with a day that recognises what Australians value.

Australians for Constitutional Monarchy executive director Jai Martinkovits said Senator Thistlethwaite was trying to get around the overwhelming rejection of a republic at the referendum in 1999.

”The plan to get rid of the oldest public holiday in this country is really an attempt to circumvent the will of the people,” he said, adding the senator had an agenda of ”creeping republicanism”.

ACM national convener David Flint said the senator probably had other ideas. ”He’ll be on to the flag next,” he said.
