LulzSec’s Teen UK Operative is Back in Jail

Ryan Cleary (pictured), the 19-year-old from Essex, England arrested last June for aiding in the operations of notorious hacking collective LulzSec, has landed back in jail, the AP reports. Cleary, who was never an official LulzSec member but ran an Internet Relay Chat that the group used to communicate, had apparently been trading e-mails with Hector Xavier Monsegur, a.k.a. Sabu, the recently outed LulzSec mastermind turned FBI informant. That was a direct violation of his bail agreement, which dictated that Cleary was to have no access to the Internet whatsoever. London’s Metropolitan Police say they rearrested Cleary on March 5, the day before the FBI revealed Sabu’s identity, and that “the party boy of the projects” had been eagerly spilling the beans on his fellow hackers. According to Cleary’s lawyer, the teen is being held at Chelmsford Prison north of London, awaiting a court appearance in May.

The news breaks on the same day that Anonymous, the hacking conglomerate from which LulzSec sprung, was supposedly going to shut down the internet in a plot announced last February called Operation Global Blackout. The ambitious attack — which would have targeted the world’s 13 DNS servers, thereby disabling domain name functioning and crippling the World Wide Web — was allegedly to be in retaliation to the arrests of six LulzSec members this month, 25 members of Anonymous last month, as well as the ongoing threats of SOPA, PIPA and ACTA. Despite Interpol’s secretary general Ronald K. Noble saying yesterday that the threat was credible, there seems to be no widespread internet-killings yet going on.

According to Anonymous’s official Twitter account, the whole thing was just a big April Fool’s Day prank all along. (And if you believe that, we have a network bridge to sell you.)
