Major rescue operation following deadly tornado in Japan

Dramatic television footage from the city revealed how houses were swept up in
the storm from their foundations, causing cars to overturn in muddy debris
and concrete power poles to tumble.

Hundreds of houses suffered from broken windows, with aerial images also
showing many properties with their roofs entirely blown away in the storm.

“You could see the roaring column of wind rushing with sparks from live power
lines inside it,” one local man told the national broadcaster NHK.

“Winds blew into my house. It took only a moment,” a woman also told the
broadcaster.

Other cities hit hard included Moka, Mashiko and Motegi in Tochigi prefecture,
with around 300 houses damaged, according to Kyodo news.

Fukushima prefecture, home to the tsunami-hit nuclear power plant, was also
affected by the storm, with 20 plastic greenhouses reportedly blown away.

Meanwhile, an 11-year-old schoolgirl remains in a serious condition after
being struck by lightning while taking shelter from the storm with her
mother under a tree in a park in Saitama prefecture.
