UPDATE 2.50pm: A MAN has been charged with murder following a double homicide in Victoria’s west.

Police said the Casterton man, 31, would appear in the Mt Gambier Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.

Victorian detectives will apply for his extradition.

South Australian police arrested the man at Mt Gambier about midnight.

SA police said the man was been detained on “suspicion of being involved in an alleged double homicide in Victoria overnight’’.

Victoria Police were called to a house in Miller St  in Casterton, about 350km west of Melbourne, about 10pm last night after responding to requests to help four people suffering stab wounds.

Police had earlier been called to the house about 8.30pm after reports of a neighbourhood dispute.

About an hour-and-a-half later they returned after the fatal attack.

The incident is believed to have been sparked by a dispute between two groups of people at the house.

Police believe the parties involved were known to each other.

When emergency crews arrived at the property they found a 38-year-old Casterton man already dead at the scene.

Another badly wounded 25-year-old man from Warrnambool died on the way to hospital.

He suffered multiple stab wounds to his abdomen and was being taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, before the rescue helicopter was diverted to Geelong as his condition worsened.

A 28-year-old Hamilton man is at Hamilton Hospital recovering from stab wounds to his torso.

He also had multiple stab wounds and remains in a serious but stable condition.

A police spokeswoman said the Ethical Standards Department was overseeing an investigation into the incident.

“This is standard practice for incidents of this nature,’’ she said.

“South Australia police are also assisting Victoria Police with the investigation.’’
