Police investigating an attack that left a woman in Perth with burns to 60 per cent of her body have charged a man with attempted murder.

Cui Ling Tao, 29, was found tied up to furniture inside a Brinkley Street unit in Cannington last week by firefighters called to investigate a blaze at the property.

Police believe she was doused with an accelerant, possibly petrol, and set alight.

Ms Tao remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Police say her 32-year-old flat-mate has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated robbery and criminal damage by fire.

He has also been charged with stealing a motor vehicle and using violence to render a person incapable of resisting.

It is alleged he attacked Ms Tao after she refused to give him money.

A tip off from a member of the public lead to the arrest of the man.

Police say they made a breakthrough in the investigation after appealing for public help yesterday to find Ms Tao’s car, which was discovered in Bentley.

Acting Inspector Chris Adams says Ms Tao remains in a critical condition.

“The victim is still in a serious but stable condition and police are obviously speaking with her but as she is on a long road of recovery we will be talking to her in more detail as the investigation progresses.”

The man is due to appear in the East Perth Magistrates court tomorrow morning.
