Man douses woman in flammable liquid, threatens to set her alight

A MAN threw accelerant on a woman’s face and threatened to set her alight – the second such assault in as many days.

A 53-year-old woman was returning to her car at the back of a restaurant at 10pm last night in the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, when a man approached her from behind.

The man threw liquid at the Mornington woman’s face, which police believe was some type of accelerant.

He then produced a cigarette lighter and threatened to set her alight.

The woman pushed the man and tried to run away but fell to the ground after he hit her on the head.

The man then stole the woman’s handbag and fled down a laneway towards Main St.

The woman was taken to Frankston Hospital with minor injuries.

This comes after a Brisbane father of two was charged with assault after he allegedly poured petrol on a neighbour and asked for a lighter.

The Brisbane Magistrate’s Court heard that Todd Freeman and his neighbour began to argue on New Year’s Day after exchanging words.

Defence counsel Michael Forrest said that the incident was an escalation of a neighbourhood dispute.

“The barking dog scenario played heavily on his mind,” Mr Forrest said.

It was alleged that the argument became violent after Freeman threatened his neighbour with a knife, but the court was advised that the facts of the case were still unclear.
