Man jailed for prostitute attack

A man who carried out a violent, methylamphetamine-fuelled sexual fantasy on a prostitute in northern Tasmania has been sentenced to six years in jail for attempted murder.

Brody Leigh Munro, 22, called several sex workers with a new, pre-paid mobile phone in November last year before successfully luring one to his home at Mowbray, north of Launceston.

There he punched her, struck her with a tyre wrench and pulled cable ties tight around her neck before she escaped as he examined cuts to his own hands.

Tasmanian Chief Justice Ewan Crawford said Munro would probably have killed the woman but for two of her fingers being wedged between the tie and her neck, adding that Munro might have found killing more difficult than he had expected.

Justice Crawford called the attack “chilling” and said there were elements of it being pre-planned.

The actions of Munro, who had only previously committed traffic offences, had been “the product of a violent sexual fantasy”, but the biggest factor in him committing the crime had been his intoxication with drugs, the chief justice said.

Munro, who pleaded guilty, will be eligible for parole after three years.
