Police have released CCTV vision of a car they want to trace in relation to a fatal shooting outside a Brisbane shopping centre last night.

Police are hunting a gunman who shot a 22-year-old man dead outside a sushi restaurant at Eight Mile Plains on the city’s southside, in the second fatal gun attack in the area in 24 hours.

The victim had been dining with friends and was leaving the restaurant at the Warrigal Square Shopping Centre at Eight Mile Plains around 7:00pm (AEST) when he was shot in the head in the car park.

He was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition but died just before 2:00am.

Police believe the man who was gunned down knew his killer, and are searching for a silver BMW coupe that may have been connected with the crime.

Superintendent Mick Niland says police cannot say at this stage whether it was gang-related.

“He [the victim] was known to police but can I say this – it’s been earlier desribed as a random or a drive-by shooting – we’re of the belief that this in fact this isn’t the case in this instance,” he said.

Police say there were several witnesses to the attack.

The car park remained cordoned off this morning but shoppers who were at the centre last night have been allowed back to pick up their vehicles.

Shops in the centre are reopening but employees say they are shocked and scared.

The attack came one day after a man was shot dead during a violent home invasion at the nearby suburb of Rochedale South.

In that incident, police say two men broke into a home on Priestdale Road and shot a 56-year-old man who lived there. He died at the scene.

Queensland Police Minister Dave Gibson says he has offered additional resources to help investigate the two shootings.

“I want the [Queensland Police Service] to do their job – I have full confidence in their ability to investigate these matters properly,” he said.

“I want to make sure that if they need any resources to bring the guilty people to justice that they have a commitment from the Government that they will have those resources.”

Detectives from the Homicide Squad and State Crime Operation Command have joined the investigation while a major incident room has been established at the Mount Gravatt Police Complex.

Detective Superintendent Mick Niland says police are not yet making a link between the two killings.

“We will look at all angles but at this stage there are no connections,” he said.

He has asked anyone with information to contact police.

“We are searching for an offender or offenders,” he said.

“We are seeking assistance of the public in relation to the possibility of a motor vehicle.”

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson says the location of the two fatal shootings this week is not considered a troublespot for gun crime.

The suburbs of Rochedale South and Eight Mile Plains are around six kilometres apart.

Mr Atkinson says he hopes the shootings are not the beginning of a dangerous trend.

“Each year in Queensland we have about 50 to 60 murders – that’s been fairly stable now for quite a long time,” he said.

“Every one of course is a terrible crime and the worst crime on the books as I said earlier.

“But there is no particular indication that Eight Mile Plains or Rochedale stand out.

“Of course that’s something we want to monitor closely.”

Mr Atkinson says a special unit was recently set up to investigate gun-related crime.

“Generally speaking the level of firearms use in crime is something that has actually declined post-Port Arthur and the gun buyback scheme, but there does seem to be an emergence and increase in recent times,” he said.

Police are asking anyone with information about either incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via crimestoppers.com.au.
