Militants attack Afghan governor’s office

Four gunmen stormed the building of Farah Province’s governor all of whom were killed in subsequent fierce clashes with Afghan security forces inside the compound on Thursday.

The Taliban militants have stepped up their attacks against Afghan government forces and US-led foreign troops across the country after announcement of their spring offensive earlier this month.

Attacks targeting government buildings and security officials usually pick up in the springtime as weather conditions improve.

Despite the presence of thousands of US-led forces in the war-torn country for more than a decade, insecurity has been constantly on the rise across Afghanistan.

The US-led war in Afghanistan has become the longest war in US history.

Overall, 3,021 civilians died in violence related to the war and 4,507 were injured in 2011. The UN has attributed 77 percent of the deaths to militant attacks and 14 percent to the US-led foreign troops and Afghan forces. Nine percent of the fatalities have been classified as unknown.
