Mum pleads for answers over taxi incident that left son critically injured

THE mother of a man who was left critically injured after falling from a moving taxi says a “whole piece” of the night remains a mystery.

Tyrone Hooper, 23, was travelling home from his friend’s house in Boronia early Sunday morning when he fell from the open door of the taxi, receiving critical head injuries.

The cab continued driving north, leaving the intersection of Dorset Rd and Boronia Rd, about 3pm. Mr Hooper, from Chadstone, was left lying on the road.

His mother Margaret Ball said there was a “whole piece” missing from the night.

“He (the driver) must’ve at least seen something because somebody just doesn’t fall out of a taxi without noticing anything at all,” Ms Ball said.

Speaking to media with her son Jesse today, Ms Ball said although her son’s condition was improving the family had taken the accident “pretty hard”.

“He’s kind of the strong person in the family so it’s been a bit lonely and difficult without him,” she said.

“He’s had two brain surgeries – one at the back and one at the front – he’s got the tubes down, he’s still on life support.

“On Sunday his head was swollen but now that’s come down a bit and he’s more stable so he’s starting to get a little bit better, thank god.”

Ms Ball said her son was a “little bit of a risk taker”, but she didn’t think he had been drinking.

Mr Hooper was helped to the side of the road by witnesses before being taken to The Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

Detective Senior Constable Kevin Morgan, from Knox police, urged the taxi driver to come forward.

“What I would love to do is ask for the driver to hopefully contact police with a view to assisting us with actually happened in the early hours of the morning,” he said.
