My Social Strand Turns Your Facebook Profile Into an Infographic

My Social Strand, an interactive website launched which Tuesday, turns your Facebook profile into a personalized infographic. The project, created by non-profit Be The Match, aims to highlight individuals’ uniqueness in a fun way.

That uniqueness, Be The Match believes, mirrors the uniqueness of bone marrow matches.

Once you connect the Facebook app and answer a few questions, your personalized infographic will feature information such as how your social sharing behaviors compare to your Facebook friends’, how your interests compare to other respondents, how long you’ve been alive, the most popular song the day you were born (which plays in the infographic) and how many other people share your name.

Be The Match, a non-profit dedicated to building the National Bone Marrow Donor Program, didn’t create the project to teach people about the need for bone marrow donors for individuals suffering from leukemia, lymphoma and other diseases. Its hopes are, rather, that you’ll want to see your personalized infographic, and in the process will decide to register for the bone marrow database.

“Our hope is that in just a couple minutes of engagement, people will want to get involved,” a Be The Match spokesperson told Mashable. “We think this is a simple, quick way to get people involved without getting into the heavy science.”

According to Be The Match, only half of the 10,000 people in need of bone marrow donors ever find matches. As the donor database increases, so do the chances of finding matches for those in need.

What did I learn about myself from my personal infographic (below)? My name, Zoe, is most popular among 7 year olds, “Right Here Waiting” was the No. 1 song the day I was born, and I have a lot in common with “Erma,” a Be The Match bone marrow donor.

Do you think My Social Strand is a good tool to encourage people to sign up to become bone marrow donors? Did your desire to see your own personal infographic cause you to learn more about others’ need for bone marrow matches? Let us know if you think this is a successful social media campaign in the comments.
