Nato still has its work cut out in Afghanistan

This should not detract, however, from the highly effective response by those
same security forces, which managed to kill or capture all the attackers
within hours. The performance of the indigenous troops was especially
encouraging, since Afghanistan’s future ultimately rests in the hands of its
own soldiers, rather than the 140,000 Nato troops – including 10,000 Britons
– who are due to end their involvement in combat operations by the end of
2014. Enormous resources have been channelled into helping the Afghans
become a credible military force, so it was heartening to see the
professionalism they displayed in responding to what was clearly a
well-organised operation.
