NDIS a shared responsibility, Gillard says

A meeting of commonwealth and state leaders will focus on getting launch sites in place for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Prime Minister Julia Gillard says.

Ms Gillard will host premiers and chief ministers at The Lodge on Tuesday evening ahead of the Council of Australians Governments meeting on Wednesday.

“People with disabilities have waited too long,” she told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday, adding there was a billion dollars on the table to get trial sites under way.

“I will be putting the case very strongly to my state and territory colleagues that this is a shared task, a shared responsibility and we have got to get it done.”

While the NDIS will be the central focus of the meeting, there was further work to be done under COAG’s seamless economy agenda.

The aim was to allow businesses around the country to ply their trade without tripping over different regulations, in different states, Ms Gillard said.
