New York Times Feature Includes Embedded ‘Kick Ass’ Game

The web version of a feature in this weekend’s upcoming New York Times Magazine article on “stupid games” features a very clever perk: An embedded game modeled on the game Kick Ass.

Instead of the usual lead image on the page, there’s live animation that includes raining asteroids, a triangle-shaped shooter and simple directions. To fire, hit the space bar. To move the shooter, press the arrows on your keyboard. As with Kick Ass, you can use the shooter to destroy the rest of the webpage.

Doing so allows you to shoot other objects on the page, like ads and suggested stories. If you hit them, they disappear. In some cases, hitting them again will bring them back. In others, you can continue firing until you’ve 86’d a headline. At the moment, the game only appears on the web version of the story. The Times’ iPad app doesn’t offer the ability to play.

In a blog entry explaining the move, Samantha Henig, a Times editor, explains that Kick Ass, which was invented by the then-17-year-old Erik Andersson of Sweden two years ago, caught the fancy of Jon Huang, a multimedia producer at publication. Huang thought adapting the game to the article would be a good idea. In this case, the subject matter — games like Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja — makes for a very good fit.

Despite its reputation as the stodgy “Grey Lady” of journalism, The Times has experimented with its web page before. A homepage ad in February for Met Life, for instance, let you play piano like Schroeder, the Peanuts character. Last year, the USA network rigged the page to turn it into a game promoting the show White Collar. Before that, Mac and PC from the long-running Apple campaign conversed with fake ads on the page.
