No survivors found in Pakistan avalanche

Helicopter rescue teams and troops with sniffer dogs continue the search for some 124 soldiers, along with 11 civilian employees of the Pakistani military which were buried in the Siachen glacier in the Karakoram range of Himalayas early Saturday.

According to experts, chances of finding any survivors are very low.

“The casualties in avalanches occur due to pressure of heavy weight, extreme cold and lack of oxygen,” mountaineering expert Colonel Sher Khan said.

No reports of recovering survivors or bodies have been made so far.

Avalanches and landslides frequently block roads and isolate communities in the mountains of Pakistan.

Pakistan’s mountainous areas neighboring Afghanistan and the Himalayan territory divided between India and Pakistan are prone to avalanche.

The region’s harsh weather claims more lives yearly than the Indian-Pakistani conflict over Kashmir.

It has been said that India has some 5,000 soldiers present on the glacier, while Pakistan has less than half that figure.
