NSW police shoot man dead: second in month

A man shot dead in northern NSW overnight is the second fatal shooting by police in less than a month, and the third death.

Officers were called by the residents of a rural property on Billarimba Rd at Rocky River, about 30km from Tenterfield, at 8.10pm (AEST) on Sunday.

The residents told police that a man had threatened them with a knife.

“Officers went to the property and were also confronted by the man allegedly armed with a knife,” the statement said.

“Police fired at least one shot, fatally injuring the man.”

Detectives from state crime command’s homicide squad have launched a critical incident investigation to examine the shooting.

The officers are on the scene and will provide all information to the NSW Coroner.

A spokesman for police said no other information was available at this time.

Police came under criticism in March for the death of Darren Neill, 34, at the Westfield Shopping Centre at Parramatta.

That death came just days after 21-year-old Brazilian student Roberto Laudisio died after being Tasered by police in central Sydney.
