O’Farrell welcomes Newman’s win in Qld

NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell has congratulated incoming Queensland premier Campbell Newman on leading the Liberal National Party to a decisive victory.

He said Mr Newman had fought a strong campaign.

“Like the NSW Liberals and Nationals at the NSW election a year ago, the Queensland Liberal National Party went to voters with a positive, practical plan to fix the mess left by a long-term Labor government,” Mr O’Farrell said in a statement.

“Tonight’s result is a credit to the positive campaign run by the LNP and the leadership of Campbell Newman.”

He said he wanted to work with Mr Newman and his government on a range of issues that affect both states, particularly on economic matters and delivering seamless government services for communities near the NSW-Queensland border.

But he also applauded Labor premier Anna Bligh and her contribution to politics.

“I want to also pay tribute to outgoing Premier Anna Bligh,” Mr O’Farrell said.

“Like all Queensland premiers she was a fierce advocate for her state’s interests, but always impressed me with her work ethic and common sense.

“I enjoyed working with Anna, especially during COAG, but won’t miss her constantly reminding me of recent State of Origin results.”
