The State Opposition has accused the Government of wasting at least $16 million on extra senior bureaucrat positions.

Government figures show the number of people employed in the Senior Executive Service jumped from 374 in 2008 to 450 last year.

That is an increase of 20 per cent.

Labor’s Mark McGowan says it is unnecessary.

“West Australian taxpayers are paying for a massive increase in the number of senior bureaucrats in Western Australia,” he said.

“To what end I don’t know because I think you can probably do more with less.

“What this shows is Mr Barnett is a tax and spend Liberal with little appreciation of the impact of these expenses on the budgets of ordinary West Australians and the fact that someone has to pay for it.”

In a statement, the Premier Colin Barnett says the higher staff numbers are a result of breaking up large, inefficient departments run by the previous Labor government.

Mr Barnett says service delivery has improved as a result of the changes.
