Over 100 Air India pilots go on strike

“About 100 pilots representing the Indian Pilots’ Guild reported sick Monday night, leading us to cancel four international flights,” AFP quoted Air India spokesman K. Swaminathan as saying on Tuesday.

He said Tuesday’s strike was a protest against the training of pilots from Indian Airlines, which merged with Air India in 2007, to fly new Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes. The striking pilots claim that the training would threaten their own career prospects.

Indian Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh described the strike as “illegal” because it was launched without any prior notice.

Air India is grappling with problems due to daily losses of about 2 million US dollars, rising fuel costs, increased competition, and labor disputes.

Last month, the Indian government approved a debt restructuring plan and announced that it would allocate $5.9 billion to the airline over the next eight years.
