A man and a woman have been charged with murdering a boy in the central west of New South Wales last year.

Police say the 11-year-old boy was found unconscious at a home in Kandos, near Mudgee, in October 2011.

The child, who had a mild form of autism, was taken to Rylstone Hospital but died a short time later.

The State Crime Command has been investigating the death, assisted by local detectives.

It says officers arrested a 42-year old man and a 41-year-old woman yesterday when they walked into Mudgee Police Station.

The Commander of the Homicide Squad Detective Superintendant Michael Willing says the couple have been charged with murder.

“We’re alleging that it’s chronic neglect and abuse over a sustained period of time,” he said.

The man and woman were both refused bail to appear today at Mudgee Local Court.
