Pedestrian death adds to string of fatalities

A man has died after being hit by a car on the Pacific Highway in Sydney’s north this morning, the latest in a string of fatal pedestrian collisions.

Police said the man was struck by a northbound Mitsubishi Lancer at Berowra about 6.20am.

Paramedics took him to Royal North Shore Hospital, where he died.

A NSW Police spokesman said officers would investigate whether the man was trying to cross the road at the time.

“He was on the road,” the spokesman said.

The male driver of the Lancer was also taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.

At 9am the Crash Investigation Unit was still at the crash site outside a Shell service station.

Northbound lanes were closed and a contra-flow system was in place, with police urging motorists to take a different route.

On Monday afternoon a 34-year-old man died after he was allegedly run down on Hay Street, Bullaburra, in the Blue Mountains.

Kieran O’Connor, 33, was charged with manslaughter and negligent driving occasioning death and granted conditional bail in Katoomba Local Court yesterday.

The victim’s name was suppressed by the court.

Both men had a “domestic link to a woman”, police said.

In a separate incident on the same day a 78-year-old woman died after she was hit by a westbound Toyota Hiace on Homer Street, Earlwood.

The collisions follow a spate of pedestrian collisions in Sydney last month.

Three people died and other pedestrians were injured after nine accidents over two weeks.

The NSW Ambulance Service and the Traffic and Highway Patrol have urged motorists and pedestrians to be careful on the roads.
