Penn State officials ‘covered up Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse’

Despite being allowed to retire honourably in 1999, Sandusky was handed “continued,
unrestricted and unsupervised access” to university facilities, which
allowed him to carry on with his campaign of abuse.

His ongoing affiliation with the university’s prestigious football programme “empowered
Sandusky to attract potential victims to the campus and football events”
and manipulate them into complying with his abuse, it said.

“Our most saddening and sobering finding is the total disregard for the
safety and welfare of Sandusky’s child victims by the most senior leaders at
Penn State,” Mr Freeh said at a press conference. “The most
powerful men at Penn State failed to take any steps for 14 years to protect
the children who Sandusky victimised.”

Mr Freeh’s team interviewed 430 current or former university employees and
reviewed some 3.5 million documents. The university has since implemented
stricter background checks on employees and guidelines on reporting child
abuse.

Sandusky is due to be sentenced later this year and faces up to 442 years in
prison Paterno, the most successful university football coach in US history,
died of lung cancer in January at 85 before telling Mr Freeh’s team his
account of the scandal.
