The Pentagon is exploiting Hurricane Irene in an effort further militarize disaster response. Fox News reported today that the Pentagon is using the overstated hurricane to minimize civilian participation in emergency situations.

Over the weekend, the Pentagon appointed “dual-status commanders” to direct both active-duty troops and guardsmen assisting civilian officials in New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina and Rhode Island. In the past, the chain of command was split between federal and state authorities.

Under the cover of fixing supposed delays, duplications and gaps after Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in August 2005, the Pentagon has further crippled Posse Comitatus – restricting military involvement in domestic law enforcement – and limited the participation of the state in disaster and emergency response.

This is the first time so-called dual-status commanders have been used for a natural disaster. In the past, they were used at international summits, but not for domestic response to a hurricane.

The AP basically reports that the Pentagon used the storm as a beta test for the roll-out of the next phase of the police state – tight integration of emergency response and law enforcement on the state and local level under the military command and control of the Pentagon and the federal government.

Dual-status commanders were established by the Northern Command following the attacks of September 11, 2001. Northcom was specifically created by the Pentagon to “defend the U.S. homeland and help civilian authorities handle domestic crises like Irene,” according to the Associated Press.

The appointment of the dual-status commanders for Irene was announced by the Defense Department. Military officials said four governors and the Defense Department made the selections together.

Obama’s fancy command center is part of the effort to sell further militarization of law enforcement. The National Response Coordination Center set up at FEMA headquarters in Washington and worked with the Pentagon and other agencies during the much hyped storm.

Obama used the center to stay in touch with Vice President Joe Biden and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, among other bureaucrats, and provide valuable propaganda footage for the corporate media.

The reality of this is ridiculous. What are trying to do? Create Armageddon? There will be shoot outs in the streets.

I noticed Irene did not co-operate with the plan to pump her up into a super storm even with all the radar rings and electricity so the damage would be heavy and the troops could ‘practice martial law here in the US on us.

Could we say Divine Intervention? Yeah may be.
- I’m going to have to agree with you. I have been talking to some of my acquaintances and have found a few disturbing things. We have some evidence that HAARP is what caused the earthquake in VA. in order to change the direction of the hurricane so that it would go up the East Coast for maximum damage. It is apparent what they had in mind, thankfully it did not work out the way they had planned. Even with all the hype, they could only justify so much to the people.

This explains the 15 hellicopters I saw heading for the coast, the day before the hurricane hit. I thought then that they were moving troops to take a boat-ride to Libya, but now I belikeve they were transporting troops to be deployed right here in the U.S.

Soldiers reading this should realize that their generals are lying to them, that it is illegal to be deployed, even in a natural disaster, within the contintntal U.S., and that the whole purpose of getting people used to the military carrying out operations inside the U.S. is to get us all ready for global tyranny — where the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Acts of Congress are meaningless.

No matter what you may think of FEMA camps, or increasing military presences, this is no example of either. We have no right to damn our military for serving an area in a time of crisis. I understand libertarians do not want this kind of government intervention, but where are the private companies offering aid? I am sure there some, but not to the breadth and depth of what the military has been able to do. Before we criticize what the government is doing to help, we need to offer viable alternatives. Idealistic visions need to be met with realistic solutions. Otherwise, this bickering is useless and will only continue to invite the invetible 1984-esque government.

- I think you missed the point. The article is about how the pentagon is in charge, (ie the feds) and not the states. Not even fema is in the front leading the response. What does the pentagon have to do the disaster relief. It the states that call for help from the national guards when they are overwhelmed, not the pentagon running it all. After all, that is what fema was for in the first place. I guess the pentagon has decided that fema has to much to do with home land security and can not handle any real disaster, natural or otherwise.

Somewhere down the road our govt may even beta test inviting foreign personnel to assist federal responses, something they wouldn’t be able to do without first getting their foot in the door.
- There is a difference between the gaurd helping with rescues, and supplies and being deployed BEFORE the storm even hit. Libertaians beleive that we need a minimum defense to protect us from aggresion and to keep us safe, not to the extent that it is being used nowdays.
