THE Premier’s suspended communications director Peter Grimshaw has been accused at a gaming inquiry of wanting to do everything in his power to see the Managing Director of Star Casino Sid Vaikunta sacked.

Mr Grimshaw has come under tough questioning from counsel assisting the inquiry into the Star, Michael Wigney, SC, over what he attempted to do to have Mr Vaikunta sacked at the casino.

In one text message, from November 23, two weeks before alleged sexual harassment allegations emerged about Mr Vaikunta, including from Mr Grimshaw’s partner, (which led to his sacking) he and his partner discuss getting rid of  “Mr Nasty”.

Mr Grimshaw confirmed “Mr Nasty” was Mr Vaikunta.

Their comments came a month before the Furness review into the Star licence which the government commissioned was handed down.

In one text message on November 23, Mr Grimshaw’s partner says to him: “Any word on Mr Nasty?”

Mr Grimshaw defended the comment. “It’s a flippant reference to Mr Vaikunta. It looks a lot worse than it is.”

Mr Grimshaw also admitted passing information on the casino to the Sun Herald journalist Heath Aston in the leadup to the licence review but said he did not provide leaked incident reports taken from the casino.

Asked if he took incident reports from the casino, he said: “Not that I can recall”.

“He came to me with  . . . stories he was working on. I provided information to help him with those stories – none of it related to  my work in the Premier’s office.”

Mr Grimshaw also said suggestions in text messages between him and his partner that the casino has leaked that someone should call Echo Entertainment Chair John Story over the sexual harassment scandal were not acted on.

The text says: “I reckon he should start with her name XXXX and say ‘my partner was sexually assaulted by Sid Vaikiunta last week’.

Mr Grimshaw defended the text message saying there were lots of things he and his partner suggested doing but never acted on.

He said the casino was not taking his partner’s complaint against Mr Vaikunta seriously.

Mr Wigney then asked Mr Grimshaw if his partner’s estranged husband had been wanting to make the calls.

“Was there a suggestion he wanted to do it or wanted to contact Mr Story?,” Mr Wigney said.

Mr Grimshaw: “Not that I’m aware of.”

Mr Grimshaw also confirmed he had fallen out with Mr Vaikunta after Mr Vaikunta took the PR role off his communications director role when he was a former employee at the casino. “I said `this is not a real job anymore. He came back with a couple of options which weren’t very realistic.,” Mr Grimshaw said.

Mr Wigney suggested Mr Grimshaw had “demanded” redundancy from the casino. Mr Grimshaw said he had “asked” for it.

Shortly after he left the casino, Mr Grimshaw went to work for Premier O’Farrell.

Mr Grimshaw said he had previously told Ms Furness, in evidence before her hearings in March, about his concerns of a lack of compliance culture with new American owners at the casino.

He said of Mr Vaikunta: “I didn’t think he was the right person to run the casino.”

The hearing was also told the Gaming Minister George Souris was a “close friend” of Mr Grimshaw,

The hearing, before Gail Furness SC, continues.
