FALLEN footy star Ben Cousins has made a brief appearance in court charged with possession of methylamphetamine with intent to sell or supply the drug.

The 33-year-old, who has admitted a serious drug addiction, was charged with possession of 4.56g of methylamphetamine at Esperance Airport last Tuesday.

Police will allege Cousins had the drugs hidden inside his body when he was arrested.

Cousins did not speak during the brief court appearance and was not required to plead to the drug charge, Perth Now reported.

Smartly dressed in a neat button-up blue shirt and dark trousers, Cousin was released on bail to re-appear in court on June 27 for a committal hearing.

His bail conditions were varied slightly and he was released on $2000 bail with the addition of a $2000 surety to guarantee his next court appearance.

Cousins arrived at court just after 10.30am with his lawyer Michael Tudori.

About 15 minutes earlier his father Bryan, a former Geelong and Perth footballer and Sandover Medallist, arrived to support his son, walking through a throng of media without saying anything.

The former Eagles captain was released on bail last week but was rearrested in Esperance on Wednesday morning after breaching his bail conditions when he tried to leave the drug rehabilitation facility he had been attending, Teen Challenge.

A leading Perth criminal lawyer says there is “little chance” Cousins will be jailed if convicted over his drug charge.

Mark Andrews said Cousins would most likely escape with a fine or community order and the charge of possessing a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply might be downgraded to simple possession.

Cousins returned to Perth on Wednesday arriving to a barrage of media at Perth Airport, and reported to Scarborough Police on Friday as part of his bail conditions.

The former footballer was one of the most decorated West Coast Eagles players, winning the 2005 Brownlow Medal and playing in their 2006 premiership side, before the club sacked him in late 2007 because of his drug use.

He was suspended for 12 months by the AFL for bringing the game into disrepute before ending his playing career with the Richmond Tigers in 2010.
