Pics of US soldiers "contemptible":Smith

Defence Minister Stephen Smith says photos showing US soldiers with the remains of suspected Taliban suicide bombers in Afghanistan are “terrible” and “contemptible”.

The images, published on the website of the Los Angeles Times, show US soldiers posing in one image with a severed hand and in another with disembodied legs.

“They’re terrible, they’re contemptible,” Mr Smith told ABC Radio from Brussels on Thursday.

“They deserve nothing but condemnation.”

Mr Smith said that was also the reaction of his US counterpart, Secretary for Defence Leon Panetta, and other colleagues.

“They don’t reflect the values and the virtues of the United States or NATO or the international security assistance force for what we are trying to do in Afghanistan,” he said.

“There is no point gilding the lily, there is no point pretend(ing) it is not a setback.”

The newspaper says the photos were taken during 2010.
