POLICE hunting fugitive Malcolm Naden have had another brush with one of the state’s most wanted, after they closed in on an empty house in northern NSW.

Police said they went to an unoccupied house at a rural property near Nowendoc yesterday following reports of a break-in.

When they went to the house they were confronted by a man, believed to be Naden.

Officers drew their weapons and the man went back inside before leaving shortly afterwards, police said.

A police spokeswoman said he has not been seen since.

Operation commander Carlene York said police also recovered a firearm at the property, believed to Naden’s.

“The firearm is similar to the one used in the shooting of a police officer on December 7,” Assistant Commissioner York said in a statement.

“Forensic and ballistics testing is continuing on this weapon.

“We have also found further food and camping items in nearby bushland which we believe to have been used by Naden.”

Fingerprints of the accused murderer and rapist have also been found at the property.

Naden disappeared from his grandparents’ home in west Dubbo in 2005, days before his cousin, 24-year-old mother-of-two Kristy Scholes, was found strangled in his bedroom.

He is also suspected to have been involved in the disappearance of another of his cousins, Lateesha Nolan, a few months earlier, and the rape of a 15-year-old schoolgirl.

On December 7, police were closing in on him at a remote campsite near Nowendoc when an officer was shot in the shoulder.

No-one saw the shooter, but police confirmed days later they had found a fingerprint of Naden’s at the hideout.

Since the shooting a manhunt has been underway to find Naden, to no avail.

The NSW government has also upped the reward for information leading to the 38-year-old’s capture from $100,000 to $250,000.

Police believe Naden has changed his appearance and has cropped dark hair and a moustache.

Ms York said the recent scrape showed the importance of information from the public.

“This current incident was brought to police attention by members of the public,” she said.

“Public information has been an important part of the operation and it is something I hope will continue.”

The search for Naden, operating under Strike Force Durkin, is continuing.

Anyone with information that may assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
