LABOR powerbrokers have privately given Julia Gillard until the end of the year before a change of leadership would be contemplated, government sources said yesterday.

Senior ministers were left to defend Ms Gillard’s leadership yesterday after she suffered another blow in the polls before flying out to New Zealand for the Pacific Islands Forum, The Daily Telegraph reported.

The polls put her standing at record lows, and Labor’s chances of re-election almost beyond hope in the eyes of many Labor MPs.

Acting Prime Minister Wayne Swan and Defence Minister Stephen Smith dismissed talk of a Labor leadership change, claiming Ms Gillard’s job was safe.

“There’s no chance of us doing anything other than getting stuck in there behind Julia Gillard and putting in place these really hard reforms,” Mr Swan said.

Senior Labor sources confirmed leadership talk had simmered, with Ms Gillard’s backers warning about repeating the NSW disaster.

“I don’t think any poll or anything that happens between now and Christmas will make a difference,” one said.

“Powerbrokers have determined we are sticking with her, at least until the end of the year. I think everyone realises that it is not only the messenger that is the problem but the message as well.”

Ms Gillard also left behind her asylum seeker policy disaster, with senior sources from the party’s left faction claiming they would wait until cabinet decided on a new option before taking any action.

But the left would not accept a deal between the government and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott on any offshore processing options.

Ms Gillard and Immigration Minister Chris Bowen appear intent on pursuing offshore processing in a move that would cause a showdown in the caucus.

Ms Gillard wrote to Mr Abbott yesterday, inviting him to receive a departmental briefing on the legal options and border protection policies now open to the government after the High Court’s decision to overrule the Malaysia solution.

Mr Abbott said he would not support any plans by the government to resurrect Malaysia by changing the Migration Act.

That leaves Ms Gillard two options – Manus Island in Papua New Guinea and Nauru.

Ms Gillard said she would not take up discussions with Nauru President Marcus Stephen despite his presence in New Zealand.

Mr Abbott accepted the briefing offer and asked for the meeting to be in Brisbane today.
