Putin in Israel to discuss ‘Iran, Syria’

On the eve of the trip, Putin’s top foreign policy aide, Yury Ushakov, said it would highlight “the importance of this region (Middle East) for us and is designed to further strengthen Russia’s position here,” AFP reported.

“Of course, the Syrian topic and the situation around Iran will be discussed in detail,” he said.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany (P5+1) held a round of talks on June 18 and 19 hosted by Moscow.

The Islamic Republic and the P5+1 group agreed to hold a round of expert-level negotiations on July 3 in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

Russia is also pushing for an international conference on Syria, and has frequently emphasized the involvement of Iran in the meeting.

On Tuesday, Putin heads to the occupied West Bank and will meet with acting Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas.

The Russian president is also expected to discuss the stalled Israeli-Palestinian direct talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Abbas.

Direct negotiations between Israeli and Palestinian officials have been on hold since late September 2010.

A quartet group, constituting the United States, United Nations, European Union and Russia, has sought to bring the sides back to the negotiating table.

Palestinians, however, say they will not hold new talks unless the Tel Aviv regime freezes its illegal settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian lands.
