Qld Speaker won’t comment on Seeney stoush

Speaker of the Queensland parliament Fiona Simpson has excluded herself from Liberal National Party room meetings, but won’t comment on a reported stoush with the deputy premier.

The Courier-Mail newspaper reported on Wednesday Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney and Ms Simpson had a heated party room debate about the restoration of powers to the Speaker.

Ms Simpson, The Member for Maroochydore, officially took up the role of Speaker on Tuesday.

Ms Simpson on Wednesday told ABC Radio she would not attend the LNP room meetings from now on, in the interests of her independence.

“There will be times when there may be tension with executive members who have a different viewpoint,” she said.

“I can’t confirm what happened in the party room meeting but I am determined that this role will be upheld in a way that’s appropriate for all members of parliament.”

Premier Campbell Newman won’t say what changes will be made to the Speaker’s role until the legislation is revealed on Thursday.

Ms Simpson says she has only seen a draft version, but it was important powers were returned to the Speaker, to avoid “inappropriate incursions” by the executive.

On Tuesday Ms Simpson took the chair and spoke against changes rushed through parliament by the former Labor government that diminished the Speaker’s functions and responsibilities.

“I believe the Speaker’s role needs to be unambiguously restored in keeping with Westminster conventions to ensure that there is respect for the parliament as a whole, and an understanding that it is not an arm of executive government,” she told the House.

The LNP won 89 seats in the landslide March 24 election. The Labor opposition has just seven seats and there are two MPs from Katter’s Australian Party as well as two Independents.
