Queen on whirlwind visit to Melbourne

THE Queen is scheduled to arrive in Melbourne at 11am today in a whirlwind visit during which she will open the new billion-dollar Royal Children’s Hospital.

In a busy schedule, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are to visit Federation Square before hopping on a tram to go up St Kilda Road to Government House for a state reception.

Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu and his wife will accompany the royals aboard the newly refurbished Royal Tram, a 31-year-old Z-class repainted to commemorate the Queen’s visit.

After a fleeting four-hour visit the royal couple will head off to the airport to fly to Perth for the Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) meeting.

The royal visit will go ahead without any disruption from the Occupy Melbourne anti-capitalist protesters who were forcibly removed from the City Square by police last Friday.

At a three-hour meeting outside the State Library, their general assembly overwhelmingly decided against staging any protest when the Queen and Prince Philip visit Federation Square.
