The senate has passed legislation to create an R18+ category for video games without amendments.

Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare says the new category will inform consumers, parents and retailers which games are not suitable for minors.

Proponents of the legislation were concerned games which should have only been played by an 18-plus audience were being given a lower classification so they could be allowed into the country.

As long as the states and territories pass complementary legislation, the changes will come into effect on January 1 next year.
