Rann backs uranium sales to India

South Australian Premier Mike Rann says Australia should explore a “tough and transparent system” to sell uranium to India.

ALP federal policy currently prevents sales to India because the country has not signed international treaties to prevent nuclear proliferation.

On his last day as SA premier, Mr Rann told state parliament on Thursday it was time for a debate on the issue and called for it to be considered at the ALP national convention later this year.

“We should explore a tough and transparent system involving verification, enforcement and sanctions that would enable uranium exports to India under a very strict bilateral agreement,” the premier said.

“Australia and India should be working together to advance our common strategic interests.

“Energy security is a key part of this.

“Just as we export uranium to China under the strictest safeguards we should consider adopting a similar position with India.”

Mr Rann also acknowledged that he had previously supported the current ALP policy in regard to uranium sales.

Any deal to supply India’s nuclear energy industry would significantly benefit South Australia with the state home to a large proportion of Australia’s known uranium deposits.
