Teaching standards in Australian preschools are shocking, according to a new study funded by the Federal Government.

The study assessed 2,500 children and found the quality of instruction for a four-year-old sits at a ranking of two out of seven.

Early Childhood Minister Kate Ellis says the Government is already acting upon the report by trying to lift standards.

“What I would say is that any report which tells us we need to do better when it comes to the critical early years in a child’s life is a report that we need to pay some attention to,” she said.

“We know now that for far too long, we’ve not valued early childhood services in this country in the way that needs to be done.

“That’s why we’re so pleased that we now have a national quality reform process underway.”
