As the architect of glasnost – or ‘openness’ – last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev should approve of Twitter.
Except that it all went badly wrong yesterday when his death was announced in a Tweet that ricocheted round the world in seconds.
But the 81-year-old Russian statesman took it in his stride echoing Mark Twain and saying: ‘Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.’
Just closing his eyes: Mikhail Gorbachev falls asleep during a panel discussion at the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates last month
Laughing at the premature obituaries, the man who changed the world by dismantling the Soviet Union said: ‘It’s interesting what people are writing. Tell them that I keep living – and keep working.’
Aides to the former Kremlin leader insisted last night that Gorbachev is ‘fine’ and in ‘great health’.
One theory last night was that the rumour started because a namesake was found dead near St Petersburg.
Really? How Gorbachev is likely to have reacted to the news that he was dead
But it turns out that the other Gorbachev died two years ago, though the fact was suddenly Tweeted yesterday.
It was also reported yesterday in Moscow that Gorbachev was in hospital – but not with a severe condition.
He aide Vladimir Polyakov: ‘Who started it? I was told it went on Twitter, but no one could say where the first Tweet came from.’

I still remember his amazing performance on the Clive Anderson show, a real tour de force. The last of the 20th century’s great leaders, and a great peace maker.
