‘Risotto king’ jailed for sex with teens

A chef who worked in some of Melbourne’s top restaurants has been jailed for preying on vulnerable young girls and paying them for sex.

Simon Humble, once known as the “risotto king”, was jailed for seven years with a minimum of five years in the Victorian County Court on Tuesday.

In sentencing, Judge Felicity Hampel described his actions as predatory and manipulative.

“Your behaviour was nothing short of disgraceful and shameful,” she said.

“You exploited these vulnerable young children for your own selfish ends.”

A jury found Humble, 50, of Rosanna, guilty of six charges of sexual penetration of a child under 16. He pleaded guilty to three counts of making child pornography and one charge of accessing child pornography.

He paid his two victims, aged 13 and 14, for sexual acts between 2008 and 2010.

Humble also used his victims to try to procure other vulnerable teens who needed money for sexual favours.

He told them what body types he liked and requested photos.

During his trial, he admitted the alleged acts but said they were consensual and he believed each of the girls was over 16.

Judge Hampel said the victims were particularly vulnerable, including one who was in state care and had a heroin habit and an abusive boyfriend.

Police also found pictures on Humble’s computer of one of the victims, as well as other unidentified females and child pornography images.

Judge Hampel said the images were “demeaning and humiliating and gratuitous”.

She said Humble was still rationalising his actions by blaming his victims, whom he treated as objects for his own gratification.

Judge Hampel said the victim statements by the girls were sad reflections of their shame, regret and emotional pain.

She said there was a significant power imbalance between Humble, who referred to himself as AJ with his victims, and his victims.

His crimes came to light when one of the girls complained to police, who then began monitoring his phone conversations.

The court was told Humble worked at a string of top Melbourne restaurants including Caffe e Cucina, Scusami and once owned Southbank’s Tutto Bene. He had also won many awards.

Judge Hampel said the loss of his reputation was part of his punishment and he would undoubtedly find going to jail at his age hard.

But she said the protection of young and vulnerable children was paramount in a civilised society.

Humble is now registered as a sex offender.
