INDEPENDENT MP Rob Oakeshott went where other politicians feared to sit today, on a giant toilet erected in front of Parliament House.
Transport Minister Anthony Albanese and Liberal immigration spokesman Scott Morrison declined to mount what would be the the pedestal of a really big boy’s room.
Liberal Teresa Gambaro and Labor’s David Bradbury, did make the climb along with Mr oakeshott.
They all backed the issue which the totemic toilet represented — the problems of millions of people struggling to live without proper sanitation.
“No-one should be dying for a dunny,” said national coordinator of the anti-poverty project, John Beckett.
He said some 8.1 billion child deaths could be prevented by adequate plumbing.
Mr Beckett said the Government should provide an extra $500 million in the foreign aid budget for water and sanitation.
