Romania’s president survives impeachment referendum

“This is a great victory for Romania to get nine million Romanians out to
vote,” said the prime minister. “This is a victory for them, and I think any
politician who believes he can ignore nine million is being unrealistic.”

The prospect of further political warfare despite the result could prolong
Romania’s worst crisis since the fall of the Ceausescu regime in 1989, and
one that has inflicted serious damage on the international reputation of one
of the EU’s youngest states.

Brussels has viewed with askance the impeachment process and warned that it,
along with other steps taken by the Ponta government, have endangered rule
of law in Romania.

This month José Manuel Barroso, the European Commission president, expressed
his “serious concerns about recent political events in Romania” and
underlined the need to guarantee the “necessary checks and balances in a
democratic system”.
