‘Russians oppose intervention in Syria’

A total of 2,500 Russian adults responded to the poll which was conducted by the Russian International Institute for Media Studies on June 1-4, 2012. The results were made public on June 8, 2012.

During the poll, the respondents were asked to choose from among the provided options with regard to the Syrian crisis. The three options available, were as following:

1- The Syrian crisis is an internal issue which should be resolved by the President Bashar Assad’s government without foreign intervention;
2- The foreign states should stop bloodshed by resorting to force and topple Assad’s regime; and
3- The Syrian crisis can only be resolved through the United Nations’ peace plans.

According to the results, 49 percent of the respondents believed that the Syrian crisis is an internal issue which should be resolved by the Assad government. Some 27 percent said the Syrian crisis can only be resolved through the UN peace plans while 22 percent chose the second option. The remaining two percent chose “I don’t know” option.

The poll results show that about half of the Russians support their government’s policy of opposing foreign intervention in the Syrian crisis.

Since the beginning of crisis in Syria, Russia has continuously supported the Assad government. In addition to blocking the West’s interventionist efforts by vetoing anti-Syrian resolutions in the Security Council, Moscow has also deployed warships to Syrian waters.

Since mid-March 2011, Syria has been experiencing a deadly unrest that has claimed the lives of many people, including large numbers of security forces.

While the West and the Syrian opposition say the government is responsible for the killings, Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
