SA marchers block road in Roxby Downs

Some 300 anti-nuclear activists have protested at Roxby Downs in South Australia’s north against the proposed $30 billion expansion to BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam copper, uranium and gold mine.

Police say they are disappointed that despite an agreement with the protesters, they ignored requests to march on only one lane from the protesters’ camp to the gates of the mine, and instead took up the whole road, causing its closure for two hours.

Organisers have planned five days of action from today with as many as 500 people expected to arrive from across Australia.

They accuse the South Australian and Australian governments of failing to put the environment and people’s health before the short-term economic benefits of mining.
