Search for Tasmanian boatman called off

The search for a Tasmanian man who appears to have rowed into Bass Strait late at night to salvage an abandoned boat has been suspended.

The hunt for missing boatman Kim Smith was formally called off after underwater searches for the 37-year-old on Friday, police said.

An air, sea and land search found two life jackets and a set of oars belonging to Mr Smith up to 70km east of where he was last seen on the Blythe River near Burnie in the state’s north.

He went missing on Saturday night after taking his dinghy out around midnight.

Meanwhile police have not yet recovered the bodies of two missing lobster fishermen on Tasmania’s remote southwest coast.

No trace has been found of Tim Whayman, 31, or Ben Clarke, 29, since their upturned dinghy was discovered near Port Davey in June.
