Shoes off for road safety

We are often urged to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes.

On Friday, shoes were the centrepiece of a campaign to get drivers to consider the families and friends of people killed on the nation’s roads.

As part of Fatality Free Friday – a national day of action on road safety – Sydney’s Martin Place was filled with 1400 pairs of shoes, the average number of people killed each year on Australian roads.

Community events urging safer road use were also held in Brisbane, Melbourne and Canberra.

Australian Road Safety Foundation chief executive Russell White said he hoped the installation would get people thinking about driving safely.

He said during the 12 months to March 2012 there were 1301 deaths on Australian roads.

“This figure still needs to be lowered and we must strive to achieve zero fatalities,” he said in a statement on Friday.
