BROADER IMPACT: A pledge by the manufacturer of Apple‘s iPhones and iPads could force other global corporations to improve conditions for other Chinese workers who produce the world’s consumer electronics, toys and other goods.
ABOUT THE PLEDGE: Chinese workers at Foxconn who often spend more than 60 hours per week assembling iPhones and iPads will have their overtime hours curbed and their pay increased.
THE BACKDROP: China has long been a low-cost manufacturing center for goods sold under foreign brand names.
