It’s bad news for gun-grabbers and other enemies of the Second Amendment – only 26% of respondents to a recent poll believe the government should ban handguns.
The poll is part of Gallup’s annual Crime poll, conducted Oct. 6-9. This year’s poll finds support for a number of gun-control measures at historical lows, including the ban on handguns, which is Gallup’s longest continuing gun-control trend, according to their website.
Gallup notes that the acceptance of gun ownership is not related to crime.
“In 2008, Gallup found widespread agreement with the idea that the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees the right of Americans to own guns. Americans may also be moving toward more libertarian views in some areas, one example of which is greater support for legalizing marijuana use,” Gallup reports.
“What’s interesting here is Americans are shifting to a more pro-gun stance despite high profile incidents of gun violence – like the Arizona shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 18 others,” reports CNN in reaction to the findings.
Gallup also reported gun ownership at its highest level since 1993. Forty-seven percent of American adults admit that they keep a gun in their household, which is the highest number recorded in almost two decades.
In 1993, the Clinton administration pushed through the Brady bill to ban handguns. The law required a five day waiting period after purchasing a handgun. Clinton called the bill a “good beginning” for more gun control legislation.

I love how that last paragraph says that the Brady Bill wa spushed through “to ban handguns” and the very next sentence says that it required a five day waiting period. So wait, the bill was never intended to ban handguns, it simply installed a waiting period. Well those are two VERY different things and that would mean that Kurt Nimo is a liar and is intentionally misleading people into thinking that Clinton tried to prevent people from owning a gun when he did no such thing. If you have nothing to hide and have no criminal record, then what’s wrong with a waiting period? Or do you think it’s ok to sell guns to just anyone? No background search…no waiting period…just exchange money for guns and that is that? Oh no thanks…we don;’t just hand over cars to just anyone. We don’t just hand over airplanes to just anyone. Owning these things is a serious responsibility and the same goes for firearms.

How was it intended to be a ban? I don’t “read between the lines”…instead I read what is there…what is printed…what can I see. And nowhere in the Brady Bill does it say, “well, this bill really wants to ban guns completely but since we can’t, here lets do this instead…”
Where do you get the evidence to support your claim that it was intended to be a ban?

What don’t you understand about “SHALL NOT INFRINGE” ?
Having to get permission to exercise a right makes it a privilege, NOT a right! If you agree with background checks then you are a bureaucratic a-hole who believes people are guilty until proven innocent!
It is in no way automatic that people pass the background check, even if they have no criminal records etc. In many instances it is effectively a BAN! Bureaucracy often acts as a ban to those to refuse to spend their lives jumping through their hoops! Incremental bureaucratic bans are common in this country.
Morons like you actually think that writing on a piece of paper actually stops criminals from committing crimes!

The Amendment’s text does justify a different limitation: the “right to keep and bear arms” protects only a right to possess and use firearms in connection with service in a state-organized militia. Had the Framers wished to expand the meaning of the phrase “bear arms” to encompass civilian possession and use, they could have done so by the addition of phrases such as “for the defense of themselves”.

What is it about the term “infringed” that you don’t understand?
The Brady Bill’s original intent was an all out ban the same as the “Assault Weapons Ban” but they knew they could never get that through on Constitutional grounds so they settled for waiting periods and certain long gun characteristics e.g. flash hiders, detachable magazines, bayonet lugs etc. to identify weapons to be banned. These in themselves are infringements on the Right to keep and Bear Arms and that’s why it was sunsetted. Although a background check is now required on all retail purchases.
These two pieces of ill conceived gun ban legislation cost the Democrats the Hose and the Senate majorities while Clinton was still in office. Although the Gingrich republican House was just as slimey and corrupt as their democrat accomplices.

Again I ask, where is your proof that the intent of the Brady Bill was an all-out ban? This seems to be a huge problem for AJ and his fans…you can scream conspiracy all you want because the best part of being a conspiracy theorist is that you don’t need a shred of evidence to support your cause.

We cannot and should not apply the same standards from the Founders time to ours. They did not have armor piercing rounds. They did not have automatic weapons. This is why the wording of this and so many provisions was left intentionally vague…I believe they intended for future governments to interpret and reevaluate these clauses and then adapt them to their society.

And let me add that a lot of guns WERE banned and/or their magazines restricted to a limitted capacity. Thankfully George Bush #2 repealed a lot of that legislation but many states still keep those laws on their books to hogtie their own citizens.

Koresh declared he was entitled to at least 140 wives, that he was entitled to claim any of the females in the group as his, that he had fathered at least a dozen children through the harem and that some of these mothers became brides as young as 12 or 13 years old.

I couldn’t find Strawman’s comment regarding the militia. What was his comment?
Most state’s (if not all) Constitutions have militia clauses in them (all able bodied men) some have age criteria i.e. 17 to 67 etc, are amendments to the Constitutions. They are divided into Organized and Unorganized definitions in my state for example.
The Organized variety is the National Guard formally known as the State Militia along with their auxiliary branches, State’s Defense Forces and even a Naval Militia. These unpaid auxiliary units could even use the National Guard facilities (armories etc. ) for training purposes and could participate in training with them. I believe they even received some state funds (although minuscule)for equipment etc.
The Unorganized Militia on the other hand consisted of all able bodied men, supplied all their own gear and weapons and was completely independent of the state’s forces except in times of emergency or insurrection/invasion, could be activated by the state governor under his command.
The federal government did a masterful job in destroying the image of the Unorganized Militia in many states by portraying them as terrorists in the nineties by the same infiltration tactics as they are now doing to the OWS demonstrators.
However, the fact remains that these unorganized militia amendments and laws are still on the books (State Constitutions) in almost all states and forming volunteer militia units (Unorganized) is strictly legal and I might add patriotic in the Founding Father’s image of the world at hand.
The Unorganized variety of militia scares the living shit out of the tyrants in Washington and Wall Street much more so than the OWS demonstrators that are all over the US cities.
Take a moment to go through your state’s Constitution as they will be part of the amendments themselves and need the vote of the people to repeal them as amendments, and not just statutory law that can be repealed by legislative vote.
